Inside the INDIE WEEK Launch Party

Last night was the Indie Week Launch party at The Hideout. The venue was packed with Bands, Industry and Media and lots of familiar faces. The atmosphere at The Hideout made for a fun filled evening and everyone was ready to party.

The Launch Party Showcase was a mix of Canadian and Irish bands. Kicking off the evening was Winhara from Toronto. Their set was upbeat rock with a synth edge. Singer Daniel Sundy’s vocals were strong and melodic and the band was on fire! I didn’t manage to get a photo so here is a press photo from their site.

Next up was Jay Sparrow. I saw him a few years ago when he was with punk band Murder City Sparrows. Jay’s sound has definitely changed. You can still feel his punk spirit with lyrics that speak about the current state of the union, with music that has more of a bluesy rock feel. He’s managed by Cam and Todd at Cool Planet Entertainment, who are friends of mine. Jay Sparrow is currently working on his third solo album and I can’t wait to hear even more from him. You can see him again at Indie Week on Oct. 9 at The Cameron House.

Bella Clava, fronted by rock grrl Caitlin, put on a great set and the crowd was loving it. Their catchy songs had everyone’s head bobbing and it’s awesome to see a strong female with such great presence. Caitlin’s voice reminds me of a younger Karen O.

Then came the Irish Invasion! First up was Indie Week Ireland winners The Cutaways. You have seen my interview with them for Indie Week here . It was awesome to finally hear them live and I was not disappointed. Their pop rock sound was infectious and the crowd loved it. They have two more Indie Week shows, tonight at Bread & Circus and tomorrow at The Hideout

Closing out the night was Sixteen Layers, another Irish band and I interviewed them as well, check it out here. Sixteen Layers was my favourite band of the night and I got a CD sampler of theirs. It’s so good. Very melodic rock with clever lyrics and great guitar sound. I highly recommend checking them out and they have two more shows to play at INDIE WEEK tonight at The Bovine and tomorrow at The Hideout.

Make sure you check out the Indie Week showcases for the next 3 days. For more information, schedule and set times click here. Passes and wristbands are still available.
